Manufacturing Process

The Metal Stamping
Process.

Precision-stamped parts are produced from flat sheet material using a shearing process. The material is sheared between the punch and die, causing it to fracture along the die perimeter, producing clean, accurate profiles at high speed.

Bends are used to form parts into a 3-dimensional profile of uniform thickness, typically done with a set of tools for each feature. Punching, forming, and drawing are combined in multistage progression tools to create complex parts of various shapes and thicknesses.

  • Continuous material feed through stamping machine for high-volume output.
  • Multi-stage tools handle punching, forming, and drawing in a single run.
  • Pre-shaping via mini rolling stations or hammer process where required.
  • Parts trimmed to remove flash and control final outline dimensions.

Why Progressive Die Stamping

Advantages of
Progressive Die Stamping.

Progressive die stamping delivers a combination of speed, material efficiency, and repeatability that makes it the preferred choice for medium and high-volume production of precision stamped parts.

Volume & Speed

The progressive die stamping process operates by having a continuous feed of material moving through the stamping machine. Higher volumes of parts can be produced at quicker speeds than other metal stamping methods, significantly reducing cost per part at volume.

Efficient Use of Material

With the various methods for manipulating the chosen metal - including coining, bending, and punching, a large portion of the material is used. This is also a result of optimised tool design, making progressive die stamping a highly efficient use of raw material.

High Repeatability

By using hard tooling and high-volume production runs, parts are produced with little or no damage to the dies. This results in consistent, high-quality output across the full production run with minimal variation between parts.

Lower Cost Per Part

Due to the combination of speed, material efficiency, and repeatability, overall efficiency is achieved in the manufacturing process. Progressive die stamping consistently results in a lower cost per part compared with alternative stamping methods, particularly for medium and high-volume orders.

Secondary Finishing

Plating & Post-Stamping
Finishing Operations.

Most stamped parts require some form of surface finish to protect them from the environment or to improve appearance and performance in service. Donlouco provides a range of finishing options to meet international standards.

Zinc Plating

Parts zinc plated to EN ISO 2081 and ASTM B633 standards. Standard dipping for general parts; spin dipping for threaded items to centrifugally remove excess material and keep threads clean. Parts must be completely clean before dipping for 100% process success.

Heat Treatment

Heat treating available to customer specifications to modify the mechanical properties of stamped parts. Particularly relevant for high-strength steel components requiring specific hardness or toughness characteristics.

Deburring & Trimming

Secondary tooling to trim flash and burrs from stamped profiles. Deburring ensures safe, clean edges on finished parts. Passivation and electropolishing available for stainless steel components.

Other Processes

Additional secondary processes available include painting, passivation, electropolishing, sterilisation, and laser welding. Process selection depends on part material, intended application, and customer specification.

Frequently Asked Questions

Common Questions About
Metal Stamping with Donlouco.

Answers to the most common questions about our metal stamping services, tooling, and processes. For more detail, see our full metal stamping FAQs article.

Progressive die stamping is a metal forming process where a continuous strip of sheet metal is fed through a series of stamping stations, each performing a different operation — punching, bending, forming, or drawing. Each stroke of the press advances the material to the next stage, producing a finished or near-finished part at the end of the tool. It is the most efficient method for high-volume production of complex stamped parts, producing parts quickly with minimal material waste and consistent quality.

Stamping (or punching/blanking) shears flat sheet material into a 2D profile using a punch and die. Forming uses bends to create a 3-dimensional shape of uniform thickness. Deep drawing stretches the metal sheet into a deeper 3D form — typically a cup, shell, or housing — by pulling it into a die cavity. All three processes can be combined in a single multi-stage progression tool to produce complex parts in one continuous operation.

Donlouco stamps carbon steel, stainless steel, aluminium, and copper alloys across a range of thicknesses from 0.5mm to 10mm. All raw materials are sourced from approved suppliers with full traceability from the steel mill through to the finished part, including material certification on every order.

Yes. Donlouco specialises in producing parts using custom tooling tailored to customer-specific requirements. We can produce tooling from single die sets to complex multi-stage progression tool sets. Our engineers can work from customer drawings, 3D models, or physical samples — including reverse engineering where no drawings are available. Tools include drawing and forming operations to maximise flexibility for intricate part design.

Donlouco offers zinc plating to EN ISO 2081 and ASTM B633 standards, as well as other standards specific to customer requirements. Standard dipping is used for general parts; spin dipping is used for threaded items to ensure clean threads. Additional secondary processes include heat treating, painting, deburring, passivation, electropolishing, sterilisation, and laser welding. All plating is measured and checked by batch.

Every shipment is accompanied by full traceability records covering dimensional inspection results and, where applicable, performance test data. Raw material mill certificates are included as standard. Donlouco is ISO 9001 certified and EN 1090 approved for CE stamping of parts. Quality checks are performed routinely throughout the manufacturing process, not only at final inspection.

Yes — particularly for medium and high-volume production. Progressive die stamping combines speed, material efficiency, and repeatability to deliver a lower cost per part than most alternative manufacturing methods. While tooling investment is required upfront, the cost is recovered quickly across a production run. Hard tooling produces consistently high-quality parts with minimal die wear, making stamping one of the most economical processes available for volume production of precision sheet metal parts.
